Revisiting My Art After 1 year

General / 12 April 2021

I started this as a fun project to make a commercial teaser for a Razer Headset and to showcase it to team razer and win some goodies. But since I was a student, I was busy with my assignments and my part-time job. And because of the time constraints, I couldn't texture the headset.

But since I am about to be graduated by the end of this month, I wanted to rework one of my assets and while going through my hard disk which was found somewhere in the corner of my room, I found this headset model and I wanted to start texturing.

Time passed by and I began to start texturing but as soon as I baked the Mesh, it was full of weird artifacts and improper shadings. The mesh normals were randomly oriented which made the cushions of the headset look transparent.

So I wanted to fix these first before starting texturing. Then I started organizing my UV's and flipping the normals accordingly. But even though whatever I did, Maya shows it properly and the substance painter used to give weird errors which made me rethink my decision to texture.
but I never gave up and I wanted to find a solution.

That is when I found that my high poly model without UVs is hidden in Maya and since I have done export all, I had to deal with that issue. Glad I resolved it quickly and went ahead to texture it. Below is an image showing how the model has all quads.

Most of the times, I get feedback related to lack of attention to details, and to overcome that, I gathered as many references as possible and made sure every aspect of the object is being matched and if you can zoom into the image above, you can clearly see the material on the cushions.

After taking raw renders, I exported them to photoshop and used some compositing techniques, and made the headset look as if it is original. You can find the Final renders on my portfolio.

And thanks for reading such a lengthy blog. See you in another one.
